Chapter Eleven
“No trace? What do you mean no trace? I know that she didn’t go on any god-damn vacation! But there has to be a trail, John Black isn’t as smart as he thinks he is.” As he hears the familiar warning not to underestimate John Black, Alex North nearly throws the phone against the wall. Refusing to take a breath to calm down, he hisses into the phone, “Just figure out where he took her.”
Flipping the phone closed, Alex moves down Salem Place and turns the corner quickly. Slamming right into somebody, the person nearly drops their shopping bags and goes to apologize when Alex snaps out, “Watch it.” Dark eyes meet blue ones and both men stop. “John Black, just the man I’ve been looking for.”
John leans over, attempting to right his bags and put some off the fallen items back in, “Why is that?”
“Where’s my wife?”
“Lost her again, have you North? You know, I’m beginning to think that she doesn’t like you very much.”
Stepping closer to the tall man, Alex attempts to intimidate him through proximity, “Where is she?”
“I don’t know. Belle said that she is taking a needed vacation.”
“And I am to believe that?”
Shrugging, John begins to walk around Alex, “I don’t give a damn what you believe.”
“Where is Marlena?” John continues to walk away, but Alex stops him by forcibly pushing him into the wall, “I’m not playing around Black.”
“And I’m not threatened by you North. She and Belle left together.”
“Then where are they?”
“I don’t know.”
“You’re telling me that you have no idea where your daughter and granddaughter are?”
His eyes narrow at the mention of Claire, “What makes you think the baby went with them?”
“My sources say they were all together. And I know you wouldn’t allow them all to just simply disappear.”
“You’re right.” Pushing away from Alex, John moves past him, “Belle and Claire are currently at a beach resort resting, if you must know.”
“And my wife?”
Alex smirks at the darkness that clouds John’s features, “I don’t know. And I wouldn’t have to tell you, if I knew.” He begins to walk away, but then turns back and blows up at the good doctor, “You know what I hate the most about you? The most… is that you come here, not only take over my life, control my wife, but then come bitching at me when she doesn’t do exactly what you want her to do. I know you are controlling her and once I figure out how, I’ll make you pay. So, Doctor, it’s not my fault you can’t keep a proper eye on her.” He goes to leave, but takes in another deep breath and turns again for one final message, “And it’s bad enough that you have turned Marlena against me, but her daughter too? My Marlena would never hurt Belle the way she has, she would never just ditch her. Okay? The real Marlena doesn’t just up and leave her daughter in a hotel without a goodbye. That’s not her. But I can promise you, that I will find Doc and bring her home. And I can promise that I’ll keep her away from you.”
Watching the man carefully, Alex attempts to keep his smile to a minimum, as he tries to get more information from John. “What makes you think that I believe that?”
“I don’t get a damn what you believe.”
“And I’m sure that’s true. So-” Pointing to the shopping bags in his hands, “Do you always shop for random female clothes when you are… distraught?”
“God man, you are so paranoid. If Marlena is so in love with you, why do you fear me so much?”
“I don’t, as you say, fear you. But I certainly don’t trust you.”
“Oh, is that it? Well then, please let me show you…” John reaches down and opens up the dusty brown bag and pulls out a pale pink t-shirt and white overalls, “Think she’ll fit? I know she has been losing weight and all-” Alex’s snarl cuts off John’s sentence and allows his smile to grow. Putting Claire’s new outfit back into the bag, he pulls out another article of clothing, “And what about this one? Think she’ll like the ‘Hot Buns’ comment on the butt? Very sophisticated, dontcha think?” Shoving the small cotton shorts back into the bag, John’s lack of attention and caring mounts, “I bought my daughter and granddaughter a couple of gifts for Claire’s half birthday party. Since you came to town, we, as a family, could use something pointless to care about. Get our minds off of something. So if you’ll excuse me, I have balloons to buy.”
Moving quickly around the corner, John barely bites back a laugh and quickly steps around an advancing couple, “Excuse me.”
