Who’s Who in Salem:
The Black Family
John Black: John Black, a Ohio native, came to Salem many years ago as a broke teenager. He grew up with Stephano Dimera and they were rivals because of a past relationship he had with John’s sister. Over the years, John has always been involved with dirty dealing, such as swindling, blackmailing, and by trying to drive his ex-wife Diane insane to get custody of their son John Jr. He needs complete control over his children and wives, and will use every dirty trick in the book to get what he wants. Manipulation is his strongest suit. John Black is Salem’s resident mogul. He is a ruthless business man with a bottomless checkbook. He owns several companies in Salem…among them are Bella magazine and WFYI the local television station. He is a pioneer in the business world, but he is the worlds biggest loser in the love department… and he has had more wives than Henry the eighth. John has three children by three different women, he has Samantha (Sami) his oldest child by one of his many ex-wives Kristen. Then there is Belle his pride and joy…from a drunken one night stand with Isabella. Then last but not least there is his youngest child, his son John Black Jr. … simply known as Junior. John is known to be a heartless SOB by most people. He is seen as domineering and controlling…for all intense and purposes he is a …elitist jerk! There are very few people that John will let penetrate that wall that surrounds his heart. To date the only people who have ever broken down those walls are his brother Tony, his daughter Belle and the love of his life…Kate Roberts.
Tony Black: Tony Black, John Black’s identical twin brother, is the kindest most gentle man in all of Salem. He is nothing like his brother John other than in the very obvious physical aspect. Tony is an artist, and unlike his brother, he wants nothing to do with money, power or prestige. He leads a simple life living in the carriage house on the very back of the Black Estate. Tony thinks with his heart and never lets greed or ego lead his life, unlike his brother John.
Samantha Black: Samantha “Sami” arrived in Salem in her early teenage years where she discovered that she was John Black’s daughter by his first wife. She became the protector of her Uncle Tony, who seemed to be the only human being able to love and understand her. After many failed relationships in Salem, Sami decided it was best to leave and make a life for herself. Samantha returned to Salem in her early twenty’s to reconnect with her family. Sami is a recovering alcoholic who is in a constant struggle to hang on to her sobriety. While gone from Salem Sami molded herself a career in news media. She has very tumultuous relationship with all her family, especially her father John and her half sister Belle. The only family member that Sami seems to get along with is her Uncle Tony.
Isabella “Belle” Black: Belle arrived in Salem in much the same fashion as her half sister Sami. Belle came to find her father John Black who fathered her from a drunken one night stand with her mother. Belle arrived in Salem with and incredible huge chip on her shoulder that was directed straight at her father John. It was later brought to everyone’s attention that Belle had spent a miserable childhood playing caretaker to her alcoholic mother, which was the main reason that the huge chip on her shoulder existed. Like her sister Belle is a recovering alcoholic, however, after many bad choices and temper tantrums Belle finally settled down and became a respected citizen in Salem. She still has serious issues with her half sister Sami but Belle has managed to build a relationship with her father John. Other than Tony…Belle is the only one that John has ever let get close to him.
John Black Jr. “Junior”: Junior is John’s youngest child and only son. Junior is not close to his father. He has never been aloud to spend much time with John by his mother, Diane’s choice. Diane had sole custody of Junior, and he has resided with her and her husband, Roman Brady, who happens to be one of the people that John Black likes least in this world.
The Brady Family
Roman Brady: Roman has been in Salem all his life. He is the adopted son of Shawn and Caroline Brady, whom are the one of the most respected families in all of Salem. However the good nature of the Brady family didn’t rub off on Roman at first. In his early teenage years Roman was a troubled pot-smoking teen who stole to support his habit. As time rolled on Roman straightened up his act as far as doing drugs and stealing, however in the process he became known as quit the ladies man, or a cad if you will. In his high school career he started dating the young and innocent Marlena Evans. However after getting Marlena to fall in love with him and talking their relationship to the intimate level, Roman began a salacious affair with Marlena’s man-eating mother Martha. When Marlena found out about this affair, she was devastated and she left Salem to move on to bigger and better things. After Marlena left Salem Roman was thoroughly humiliated and embarrassed and he too left Salem. He returned several years later with a better head on his shoulders, however he was still quite the cad. After his return he meet and fell in love with Diane Dimera, whom he rescued from the evil John Black. After getting Diane away from John, Roman finally settled down, then later he and Diane were married and became a family…almost! During their marriage Roman had a brief affair with his old friend Kate Roberts, and conceived a child, Jamie. When Diane found out about this she divorced Roman. However they reconciled later on and raised their children together, as one happy family.
Diane “Dimera” Brady: Diane Dimera left their hometown in Ohio and came to Salem in search of her uncle the formidable Stephano Dimeria. Diane began working for Stephano as his maid, but after having worked there a few weeks, Stephano found out that she was his niece and would not allow her to be his maid any longer. After losing that job, Diane decided to become a nanny, and she went to work for John and Kate Black. John seduced Diane, in the hopes of getting her pregnant with a son who could be his heir (he believed wife Kate was infertile). He succeeded, and plotted to steal the baby from Diane and raise it with Kate. Meanwhile, Diane was befriended by Roman Brady( who had been hired by Kate to learn the identity of the father of Diane’s baby). When Kate learned John had fathered Diane’s son, she divorced him, allowing John to marry Diane. Once married, John made Diane think she had gone crazy and had her committed to a mental institute, all in hopes of gaining sole custody of John, Jr. However, Roman Brady learned of John's schemes, rescued Diane from the mental hospital, and helped her regain custody of her son. Once divorced from John, Diane was free to wed her true love, Roman.
The Evans Family
Martha Evans: Martha was a frustrated homemaker (and later a real estate agent) who seduced a very young Roman Brady while he was dating her daughter, Marlena. When Marlena found out about her mother and Roman’s torrid affair, Marlena left Salem. After Martha lost both Roman and then her husband Larry (heart attack) Martha turned her attention elsewhere. Martha was seldom herd from in Salem. She went about her daily life and spent most of that seducing any man that crossed her path. She spent most of her life in bars picking up men for one night stands. Until one day her daughter Marlena returned to Salem. However, Marlena’s return didn't bring about the mother-daughter reunion Martha had hoped for. Marlena was still unable to forgive her mother for her nefarious seduction of Roman and "anything else in pants".
Marlena Evans: Marlena and her mother, Martha, came to Salem when Marlena was a child. While in high school Marlena had an affair with Roman Brady, but ended it when she discovered that he was bedding her mother at the same time! Marlena left Salem to move on to bigger and better things. She made a career for herself in the news media becoming a very powerful executive. Marlena started out life as sweet and innocent, however after Roman destroyed her trust and faith in people she changed dramatically. She became hard and cold and she would stop at nothing to get what she wanted. She didn’t have time for anything other than her work, besides the one thing she wanted most she was never able to find…love!. Marlena returned to Salem in 2005 as the local television station, WFYI's ,newest station manager, getting the job that Roman wanted.

Kate Roberts: Kate has been in Salem for most of her life. Before she came to Salem she lived in several different foster homes because her parents had died. No longer being able to take the life of a “ward of the state“, Kate ran away. With no where to go and no one to turn to she became a prostitute to support herself. During her adventurous teenage life Kate stumbled into the city of Salem. After many months there she discovered that, one of the cities most respected citizens, Alice Horton, was her aunt. After Alice took Kate under her wing, Kate changed her ways. Over time she became a very successful and respected member of Salem society. Kate married a few times but her marriages weren’t meant to be. Her most memorable marriage was to John Black, Salem’s richest and most ruthless business mogul. People warned her against taking up with John but unlike everyone else she thought there was a side to John that not very many people saw, a sweet loving and caring side. However after being married to John for a time she became aware of many of his dastardly deeds, including having an affair with their nanny at the time Diane Cole, which resulted in her becoming pregnant with John’s child. Soon after Kate divorced John. Several years later, Kate’s young daughter Billie was killed by a drunk driver. In her grief she had a one night stand with her good friend Roman Brady. That one nightstand resulted in Kate becoming pregnant with her miracle child Jamie, (Jamie was her miracle child because she though she was infertile). Kate lives a very good life now. She is known as Salem’s resident do-gooder. She is a wonderful mother, she is the editor in chief of Bella magazine, and she opened a shelter in honor of her aunt, which is called “The Alice Horton House”.
