Marlena talked with her daughter for a little while. She tried to help her understand the choices that she has made in recent months. She tired her best to convince Belle that this whole situation with Philip being held hostage and the boys going to rescue him was not her fault. Marlena felt the need to ask Belle if she was unsure of who she loved, since she was still wearing her weeding ring. In a strong positive voice Belle answered her mother, “ I am NOT unsure mom! I love Shawn…” then her voice suddenly became softer “But I’m married to Philip… and until I talk to him… I have to stay faithful to him.” Marlena looked at her daughter with pride on her face. “I want so badly to be with Shawn… to give myself to him. But… every time I look at this ring… it keeps me from acting on those feelings.” Marlena looked at her daughter with a serious look on her face, “ I am SO proud of you.” “How…” Belle interrupted, “how can you be proud of me when I married the wrong man? And now he is being held hostage… not to mention the fact that his two brothers along with my brother AND the love of my life are now in danger trying to rescue him. This is all my fault!” Marlena saw the despair on her daughters face, “NO! This war is not your fault.” Marlena turns Belle to look at her and continues in a soft tone, “And Philip being captured is not your fault.” Belle reluctantly nods in agreement, “I just want them to get home safely. And as long as I am legally married to Philip I can’t have a relationship with Shawn…if I did that would be committing adultery.” At Belle’s comment Marlena closes her eyes feeling overwhelmingly guilty at having an affair with Roman, while they were held captive. Marlena shakes off the feeling as Belle continues, “that is why until I can tell Philip in person… I have to honor my wedding vows!” Just then John walks in unnoticed… “I’m proud of you baby!” he states. Belle walks over to her father and thanks him for the compliment. “Yeah… you’re your mothers daughter alright. “ he says to her with pride. “Once you make a promise you will always do the right thing.” Marlena gets a look of shock on her face feeling unworthy of the compliment. “Baby I am all to aware of the fact that life tests us in a lot of different ways… and this is a hard test for you.” John continued “Now my opinions about Shawn don’t matter, and I personally don’t think that marring Philip was a mistake. But all of that aside the bottom line is that if you have these feelings you need to do the honorable thing and level with Philip… you owe him that much! Don’t you agree Doc?” Marlena stands there bewildered not knowing what to say. Belle turns around to hug her mother with a smile on her face, “Of course she does dad. She understands the importance of honoring her vows.” Belle pulls away and looks at a slightly befuddled Marlena, “You taught me by example” Marlena stutters slightly not really knowing what to say, “You…you know honey…I’ve…I’ve made mistakes in my lifetime.” Belle blows off Marlena’s admission, ”Yeah…but that was different. When you fell in love with dad you thought he was Roman. YOUR HUSBAND! I mean Stefano totally manipulated you. You’d never cheat on daddy now.” Marlena feels uncomfortable with all the praise and shifts awkwardly as Belle continues. “Which is why I would never hurt Philip by cheating on him with Shawn.” Marlena gives her a brief but awkward smile. “Believe me mom… I know nobody is perfect, we all make mistakes. But the fact that you always taught us how sacred marriage is, really helped me while you were gone.” Marlena looked at Belle then looked down at the ground. Feelings of shame briefly washing over her. She looks up at her husband and walks over to him. “And that’s why I would never hurt Philip. He’s my husband, I married him of my own free will and I would never betray our vows by cheating on him with Shawn. Even if Shawn is the man that I love.” At that moment Roman and Kate come walking back in from the kitchen. Kate stares daggers at Belle. Noticing this Marlena speaks up, “ I never knew I had so much influence on your views of marriage” Marlena says awkwardly looking over at Roman and Kate. “Well you never preached to us or anything” Belle says “It was by example. I always knew that you would never cheat on dad, no matter what. “ Roman stares at Marlena as Kate approaches Belle. “But you were MORE than willing to break Philips heart by leaving him for Shawn!” Kate spit out in a spiteful tone. Belle looked at Kate in shock as Kate continued to spew her venom at her “That is if Shawn doesn’t get my son KILLED before you get the chance!” Belle approached Kate with an attitude that was unlike her, “EXCUSE ME, but YOU were the one that wanted Shawn to go over there and risk his life! You didn’t tell anyone when you found out what he was planning. YOU are the only reason that they are over there right now!” John, Marlena and Roman saw the impending battle and approached Belle and Kate. Roman spoke hesitantly, “Look why don’t we all just calm down and…” Belle cut him off, “ No… Kate is just upset because Shawn dragged Rex and Lucas in to this!” “Your damn right I’m upset! Because now three of my sons are facing death because of you IDOITIC boyfriend!” Marlena looks at Kate with contempt at the way she is talking to her daughter, “ The only reason that Shawn wants to rescue Philip in the first place is so he can bring him home in one peace, so you can turn around and ask him for a divorce! Isn’t that terrible civilized of you!” Roman senses the tension in the room and tries to calm Kate down, “Kate…Kate come on…” but Kate turns to him and cuts him off “NO… no I know that Shawn is your nephew but you have NO idea of the things that he has done while you have been gone.” Kate turns back to Belle, “I am not the only one to blame here… If Philip looses his life because of this so called rescue mission… his blood is on YOUR hands as well as Shawn’s!” Marlena looks at Belle with sadness… and then turns to look at Kate with fury in her eyes.
John walks over to Belle but looks at Kate, “We discussed this Kate. You know that Belle is not responsible.” Kate, not wanting to look bad in John’s eyes softens her tone and apologizes, “I’m sorry. It was wrong… I just… I am feeling so frazzled.” She looks over at Roman, “It is just wonderful that the two of you are back, but I think that it has just made me feel worse about Rex and Lucas… and Philip. And now there is a possibility that I could loose three of my four sons… and I can’t help but to blame Shawn.” Marlena didn’t buy that weak attempt at an apology, which she knew was all for John’s benefit. She looked at Kate with a look of disgust as she thought to herself ‘How DARE you sit here and spew your venom at my daughter and then try to make yourself look better with that lame ass apology?’ Then John broke the silence, “It’s all going to work out Kate.” Smiling lovingly at John Kate spoke, “ I just need to get some air”. As Kate walked to the terrace Marlena could no longer keep her mouth shut, “It appears to me Kate that Shawn isn’t the only one that you blame for the situation your sons are in.” Kate stops dead in her tracks and turns to look at Marlena with a sad expression in her face, and sadness in her voice, “Marlena… I apologized for blaming Belle.” Marlena looked at her with seriousness in her gaze, as she spoke, “Yes you did apologize Kate… and I get the distinct feeling that, that apology was as FAKE as the sadness in you voice right now!” John and Roman looked at each other in shock at the words Marlena just said, then John turned and spoke to Marlena with a slight edge in his voice, “Marlena… that’s enough!” Marlena looked at her husband in shock. She was wondering how it had come to this. Since when would her husband take Kate’s side, and not stand by her… his wife, while she was defending their daughter! Marlena got a weary feeling as she realized that this might not be the blissful reunion that she had hoped for!
