A week has passed since Marlena and John last saw each other at the church. John has secluded himself in the penthouse. He has been in excruciating pain, both physically and emotionally everyday. Since no one, not even Kate, knows that John is still using illegal drugs, he cant bring himself to go out in public, because he has been on a constant high ever since that night that Marlena left him standing all alone, at the alter of that church. His mind had been occupied by two things lately, rescuing the boys from their captivity, and trying his damndest to get through to Marlena. They have talked to each other a few times on the phone. And John has sent Marlena lilacs everyday, accompanied by notes or letters which profess his love, and devotion to her and their marriage. Marlena is sitting on the sofa at Belle’s loft. She is wrapped in a throw blanket looking at the family photo album. Belle comes down the stairs and sees her mother staring dreamily at the photo album for what seems like the hundredth time since she had been staying there. She walks over to her mother and places a kiss on the top of her head, “Call him mom!”, she says in a flat but loving tone. Marlena looks at her with genuine wonder on her face, “Call who?” Belle turns around and looks at her, “Hmmm let me think..” Belle places her index finger over her lips as she pretends to contemplate Marlena’s question, “Hmmm… DAD! That’s who.” Marlena shakes her head no and goes back to perusing the photo album. “Mom come on… you know you miss daddy. I don’t know why you are putting yourselves through this hell.” Marlena drops the album and looks at Belle, “First of all… this was my idea not your fathers. So I am not going to call him every five minutes. Secondly of course I miss your daddy… but honey we both need some time to… figure out what we want.” Belle sighs,” Well it seems to me as though dad has been quite clear about what he wants.” Marlena was getting frustrated with this discussion, “Belle…” Marlena was interrupted by the sound of the doorbell. Belle looks at her mother with a smirk on her face and talks to her as she walks over to answer the door, “Oh my… I wonder what that could be? Could it possibly be the DAILY delivery of lilacs for one Mrs. Dr. Marlena Evans Black?” Belle said while she was standing at the door but looking at her mother. Marlena has an amused smile on her face, “Answer the door smarty pants!” Marlena said as she let out and excited giggle. Belle shook her head and laughed in return as she answered the door, “Hi Josh!” Belle said laughing. “Hi Belle, I have…” Belle jumped in, “Let me take a wild guess…you have a delivery for Dr. Marlena Evans Black?” Josh nodded his head and Belle continued, “And your tip has already been taken care of…am I right?” Josh let out a laugh, “You are getting good at this Belle… I wish all of my deliveries were this easy!” They both laughed as he handed her the package. Belle waved goodbye to Josh, “Bye…I’m sure I will see you tomorrow.” she said as she closed the door. Belle walked toward her mother while inspecting the package, “Oh mom… I see something extra here!” That got Marlena’s attention, “Really…what is it?” she said as she grabbed for the package and Belle pulled it away. “Gee mom a little anxious or what?” Belle said laughing. Marlena looked at her, “Well I do believe it is for me, nosey!” Marlena grabbed the package from Belle. She smelled the lilacs for a moment with a huge smile on her face and then noticed that there was a black box nestled in the flowers along with her usual card. “Oh my!” was all she said as she pulled the box from its hiding place. Belle watched her mothers face light up, “Boy…dad sure knows how to get to you doesn’t he?” Marlena nodded as she wiped away a tear from her eye, “Yes…he most certainly does!” Belle saw the far away look in her mothers eyes as she settled onto the sofa to read her latest love letter from her husband, “I will give you some privacy.” Marlena looked at her daughter with motherly love shinning in her eyes, “Thank you baby girl.”
Marlena settled herself on the sofa as she held the card in one hand and the black box in the other. She sat there contemplating which one she wanted to open first when she saw that there was writing on the back of the envelope which said, “Read this BEFORE you open the present Doc!” She let out a hearty laugh, “You know me so well…don’t you my love!” She sat the box on her lap and opened the card. She put her index finger to her lips trying to stop the happy cries that were trying to escape as she read the letter her husband sent.
My Dearest Love, Baby…I know that you are hurting right now. I know you feel that everything that you fought so hard to get home to is gone…but I am telling you that isn’t the case. All I am asking for is a chance…a chance to prove that I love YOU! You know that from the first day that I saw your beautiful face…I knew…I KNEW that we would be together FOREVER! Honey I deserve at least the chance to try. Give me this chance and I will prove to you that your doubts are wrong. I promise you that I will never break your heart and I will do my best never to make those gorgeous eyes cry. Marlena you are my life’s partner… and I would rather die than to live without you…you know that! Honey you have all of me…heart, mind and soul! I have NEVER loved anyone the way I love you. And there is no one on this earth that could ever love me the way you do. Please…I beg of you…don’t let me lose you all over again! For this time…it would surly kill me. Baby…don’t throw away this second chance that God has given us. I promise I will prove to you that you are the ONLY woman that I love with all my heart… if you give me the chance!
Your Forever Love, John P.S. you can open the box now!
Marlena wiped the cascade of tears from her eyes,” Oh John…the things you can do to me with the words you say, and now a gift.” Marlena took a deep breath to prepare. After a moment she opened the box and gasped slightly, “Oh John…my engagement ring…I can’t believe that you kept it.” She let out happy giggles as she took the ring out of the box and examined it. A piece of paper in the box caught her eye. She looked at the paper and realized it was another note from John., and she read it.
Marlena, I was hoping that you would want this back on your finger…where it belongs. I couldn’t bring myself to get rid of it after I thought you died. And now I know it was because it was meant to go back to it‘s rightful owner. I hope it makes you as happy as it did the day I placed it on your finger. I also have your wedding band. But if you want that back…I will be the one to put it back on your finger! I Love You… Pretty Lady! ~John~
Marlena continued to cry. She looked at the ring, and smiled as she placed it back on her ring finger. She kissed the ring and closed her eyes, ”Oh John…Honey I love you…so much.” Belle heard her mothers soft cries and decided to come and see if she was okay. Belle walked down the stairs and saw her mother sitting there, she had her hands clasped together at her mouth and her eyes closed, “Mom… are you alright?’ Belle said in a worried voice. Marlena nodded, “I am fine baby girl…better than fine! I am great actually!” Belle looked at her quizzically, “You don’t look great. You’ ve been crying.” Belle sat next to her mother on the sofa. Marlena looked at Belle and stroked her cheek, “They are happy tears honey.” Marlena took her left hand and showed it to Belle. “Mom…your engagement ring!” Belle took her mothers hand and stared at it for a moment, “I was wondering when dad was going to give it back to you.” Marlena looked at her in astonishment, “You knew that he had kept it?” Belle nodded, “Of course he kept it, he showed it to me when Hope gave it back to him. He said that he would give it to me one day. Because it was a symbol of the undying love that my parents had for each other.” Belle said as she began to cry at the emotional memory, which also made Marlena cry. Marlena cleared her throat, “Why…why didn’t daddy just give it to you then?” Belle smiled at her, “Because he said that he couldn’t part with it right away. He has worn it on a chain around his neck since the day Hope gave it too him.” Belle saw her mother smile as that image filled her heart with even more love for John. Belle interrupted her mothers thoughts, “So you are wearing your ring…what does this mean? Do you believe that dad loves you now?” Marlena looked at her daughter, “Oh baby girl…your fathers love for me has never been in question. I know that he loves me, just as much as I love him.” Belle saw that her mother was over thinking things again, “I’ll tell you what mom. Why don’t we go out to lunch. You haven’t been out of this apartment since you got home. I want to take advantage of this good mood your in, before you find something else to worry about.” Marlena stood up with a determined smile on her face, “Your right! We should go out.” Just then the door bell rings again. Marlena walks over to get it while talking to Belle, “Besides honey…there is absolutely nothing that could possible spoil the wonderful mood that I am in today.” She said as she waved her left hand in the air showing off her engagement ring, which caused Belle to laugh with delight. Marlena turned and opened the door expecting another bouquet of flowers from her husband. But what she saw at the door was defiantly NOT what she expected…”Sami!”
